Choosing Your Plastic Surgeon
Factors to Consider
Your choice of a plastic surgeon will have immediate and lasting consequences both physically and psychologically. Take your time and be sure to choose wisely.
You should make sure the plastic surgeon has all the medical qualifications necessary to practice. He or she should come to you upon the recommendation of other people you trust such as other doctors, medical professionals and friends or family who have had personal experiences with this doctor.
You should feel comfortable and at ease with this doctor. This can includes knowing your doctor hears what you are saying and supports your goals.
Everyone’s anatomy is different. Individual factors such as body type, height, weight and age should be thoroughly discussed and understood so that your goals and your unique anatomy can be merged in the best possible way.
Understanding what can be done appropriately and aesthetically in combination with your personal ideals and goals, makes a satisfying, beautiful and sustainable outcome a reality.
Check out the “Before and After” examples the doctor provides. Ideally this will include a variety of body types and procedures. You’ll know if the doctor understands the natural symmetry within the person before you.
Medical Qualifications
Medical qualifications include a not only being board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) but, since 2006, has the new gold standard re-certification with a continuous ABMS Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program for all specialties.
Additionally, your prospective doctor should have privileges to perform surgery in the major hospitals in your area. Knowing your doctor has been officially vetted and verified by the credentials department of the major hospitals further establishes their credentials.
All hospitals go through an arduous and painstaking process to allow a doctor the “privilege” of performing surgery within their walls, and within their scope of practice.
It is not necessary to have your surgery at the hospital; on the contrary, it is much less expensive and can be safer to have you surgery in a clean office facility.
